Discover Taqueria Los Primos #1

Walking into Taqueria Los Primos #1 feels like stepping into a place the neighborhood quietly protects as its own. Tucked at 85 N B St #4, San Mateo, CA 94401, United States, this small diner doesn’t rely on flashy decor or trendy plating. Instead, it wins people over with consistency, speed, and food that tastes like someone actually cared while making it.

I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually on busy weekdays when the lunch rush spills out the door. What stands out immediately is the rhythm behind the counter. Orders come in fast, tortillas hit the grill, and the cooks move with the kind of confidence you only get from doing something the same way for years. That experience shows up on the plate. The carne asada tacos, for example, have a reliable balance of char and juiciness. The meat isn’t drowned in seasoning, which lets the natural flavor come through, especially when paired with their house-made salsa verde.

The menu is straightforward but broad enough to keep regulars from getting bored. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas, tortas, and combination plates cover most cravings. One thing I appreciate is how customizable everything is. You can choose your protein, adjust spice levels, and add extras without feeling like you’re slowing the line down. That kind of flexibility matters, especially for families or groups with different tastes. According to the National Restaurant Association, menus that allow customization tend to score higher in customer satisfaction, and this place is a real-world example of that playing out daily.

What really earns loyalty here is portion control done right. Burritos are filling without being sloppy, and tacos don’t fall apart halfway through eating them. I once watched a first-time visitor order cautiously, then immediately line up again to grab food for later. That happens a lot. Reviews online consistently mention value for money, which lines up with my own experience. Prices stay reasonable for San Mateo, an area where dining costs can climb quickly.

Cleanliness and food safety are also handled seriously. The prep area is visible, and the staff keeps things moving without cutting corners. The CDC reports that visible kitchen practices increase diner trust, and that trust is easy to feel here. You can see fresh ingredients being chopped and cooked, which adds peace of mind along with appetite appeal.

Location plays a role too. Being centrally placed makes it a popular stop for office workers, students, and locals running errands. Parking can be a bit tight during peak hours, which is worth noting, but turnover is fast. Most people are in and out efficiently, whether they’re dining in or grabbing takeout.

Customer interaction is another quiet strength. The staff may not engage in long conversations, but they remember faces and orders. After a few visits, you’re no longer just another ticket number. That sense of familiarity is something restaurant consultants often talk about when discussing repeat business, and it’s clearly practiced here without feeling forced.

No place is perfect, and seating can feel cramped when it’s busy. If you’re looking for a long, relaxed sit-down meal, this might not be ideal. But for honest Mexican food that delivers on flavor, speed, and consistency, it does exactly what it promises. The steady stream of positive reviews isn’t hype; it’s the result of years of doing the basics well, one plate at a time.

  • Incredible...simply the best tacos I've ever had. Simple, flavourful, the meats crisped to perfection. The tortillas things of beauty. If you look at my other reviews, you'll see that I'm trying to find Taqueria perfection in the bay area. While I'll continue to try others, at this point, this is it!

  • Great food and easy parking. Located in the "other area" of San Mateo, not so fancy but all really good food options. This is a sit-down taqueria. I ordered one taco with rice and beans and it was plenty! The sauces are very authentic.

  • Good food, typical taqueria in suburban San Francisco. Great varieties of meat to chooses from and portion sizes are generous. They use double tortillas for their tacos which makes them very filling.. staff are good and helpful. Bathrooms are outside so have to request keys.. food comes quick and don't forget to ask for fried onions and jalapenos that are available complementary for tacos.. price is reflective of San Francisco, bit on the upside but that's true for all locations in the region..Will go again.

  • Doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's overflowing with hospitality on the inside. Our server was just about the nicest woman ever. Super friendly. Breakfast burritos were huge, very reasonably priced, and delicious. Extremely moist. Unlimited chips & salsa served alongside them for free. Pro tip, they have coffee, despite it not being on the menu anywhere. There were also quite a few people grabbing beers with their 10am breakfast so don't be shy if you want to partake!

  • Very happy to find this place!! We had shrimp and fish tacos and they were absolutely delicious! Juicy and fresh and a lot of shrimp (also not salty at all. Had freshly squeezed juice and loved it. Such a great deal. Must try

  • Fantastic taqueria - portions are generous and the prices are very cheap. Ordered 2 regular tacos ($3.50 each): pastor (bbq pork) and carnitas (fried pork) - both were delicious. The tortillas are doubled so you don’t need to worry about the taco breaking. My friends ordered the wet burrito which was also delicious. Each table also comes with complimentary and refillable nachos with green, red and spicy salsa.
